How To Use Power Chords For Beginners
It may take some time for you to memorize, and that’s okay, because you’re already working on things that will help you memorize it. By working on your power chords through this lesson and as a part of your daily practice, you’ll start to memorize all the notes on the low E string.
What we’re going to do next is play the two-note version of the G power chord we learned in the last lesson. Remember that the note you’re playing with your index finger is the root note of the power chord, so with your index finger on the third fret here, we’ve got a G note and a G power chord.
The cool thing about power chord is that they are movable to anywhere along the fretboard, as long as your index finger is on the sixth or fifth string. The name of the power chord will simply change based on the where your index finger is. So if I move my power chord a couple of frets so that my index finger is on the first fret, this would be an F power chord, which you see labeled on the graphic on-screen.
Let’s try moving the power chord again. Put your index finger on the fifth fret of the low E string and finish your power chord shape. Based on the graphic on-screen, you can see that we’re now playing an A power chord. This may seem simple to you so far, and if it does, that’s awesome. You’ll be able to play tons of power chords just by moving the shapes around.
If this seems a little harder for you, the challenging part of this is memorizing the root notes on the low E string. Try starting out with the natural notes first, because those will come easier to you. As you practice more, then you’ll start to learn where the sharp and flat notes are too.
I mentioned earlier that you can play your power chords on your sixth string or fifth string. We’ve got a new graphic on screen at this point to show the note names on the A string, and you’ll see the note progression is the same as the low E string. The only difference is that it starts with an A note instead of an E.
Let’s try playing a power chord on the A string. Place your index finger on the fifth fret of the fifth string, and then your third finger on the seventh fret of the third string. Looking at the graphic, since your index is finger is on the fifth fret, you’re playing a D power chord.
Just like power chords on the sixth string, you can move this power chord up and down the fretboard to anywhere you like. If you move your power chord shape to have your index finger on the third fret of the fifth string, you’re now playing a C power chord.
After all this, you might be wondering why we would learn to play power chords on both the sixth and fifth string. Let’s look at a quick example of the value of using both strings. If I wanted to play a common G-C-D power chord progression and I only used the sixth string, you can see in the video that my hand has to move pretty far up the fretboard from the second fret, to the eighth, and then to the tenth. So it is possible, but it’s a lot of shifting around to worry about.
Using both the sixth and fifth string for chord progressions like this is more efficient because you won’t have to jump around so much. If I start on my G power chord again at the third fret, I can move to the C using the fifth string at the third fret still, and then finish with my D power chord on the fifth fret of the fifth string.
From watching the video and trying it out yourself, you can see how much more efficient it is to use both the low E and A strings to play power chords. As you work through them, be sure to work on playing the power chords cleanly.

It has often been claimed that the guitar is a development of the lute, or even of the ancient Greek kithara. Research done by Dr. Michael Kasha in the 1960's showed these claims to be without merit. He showed that the lute is a result of a separate line of development, sharing common ancestors with the guitar, but having had no influence on its evolution. The influence in the opposite direction is undeniable, however - the guitar's immediate forefathers were a major influence on the development of the fretted lute from the fretless oud which the Moors brought with them to to Spain.
The sole "evidence" for the kithara theory is the similarity between the greek word "kithara" and the Spanish word "quitarra". It is hard to imagine how the guitar could have evolved from the kithara, which was a completely different type of instrument - namely a square-framed lap harp, or "lyre".
It would also be passing strange if a square-framed seven-string lap harp had given its name to the early Spanish 4-string "quitarra". Dr. Kasha turns the question around and asks where the Greeks got the name "kithara", and points out that the earliest Greek kitharas had only 4 strings when they were introduced from abroad. He surmises that the Greeks hellenified the old Persian name for a 4-stringed instrument, "chartar". The earliest stringed instruments known to archaeologists are bowl harps and tanburs. Since prehistory people have made bowl harps using tortoise shells and calabashes as resonators, with a bent stick for a neck and one or more gut or silk strings. The world's museums contain many such "harps" from the ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, and Egyptian civilisations. Around 2500 - 2000 CE more advanced harps, such as the opulently carved 11-stringed instrument with gold decoration found in Queen Shub-Ad's tomb, started to appear.A tanbur is defined as "a long-necked stringed instrument with a small egg- or pear-shaped body, with an arched or round back, usually with a soundboard of wood or hide, and a long, straight neck". The tanbur probably developed from the bowl harp as the neck was straightened out to allow the string/s to be pressed down to create more notes. Tomb paintings and stone carvings in Egypt testify to the fact that harps and tanburs (together with flutes and percussion instruments) were being played in ensemble 3500 - 4000 years ago.At around the same time that Torres started making his breakthrough fan-braced guitars in Spain, German immigrants to the USA - among them Christian Fredrich Martin - had begun making guitars with X-braced tops. Steel strings first became widely available in around 1900. Steel strings offered the promise of much louder guitars, but the increased tension was too much for the Torres-style fan-braced top. A beefed-up X-brace proved equal to the job, and quickly became the industry standard for the flat-top steel string guitar.
At the end of the 19th century Orville Gibson was building archtop guitars with oval sound holes. He married the steel-string guitar with a body constructed more like a cello, where the bridge exerts no torque on the top, only pressure straight down. This allows the top to vibrate more freely, and thus produce more volume. In the early 1920's designer Lloyd Loar joined Gibson, and refined the archtop "jazz" guitar into its now familiar form with f-holes, floating bridge and cello-type tailpiece.
The electric guitar was born when pickups were added to Hawaiian and "jazz" guitars in the late 1920's, but met with little success before 1936, when Gibson introduced the ES150 model, which Charlie Christian made famous.
With the advent of amplification it became possible to do away with the soundbox altogether. In the late 1930's and early 1940's several actors were experimenting along these lines, and controversy still exists as to whether Les Paul, Leo Fender, Paul Bigsby or O.W. Appleton constructed the very first solid-body guitar. Be that as it may, the solid-body electric guitar was here to stay.
How To Play Power Chords Tutorial
A power chord is a two-note chord, with no major or minor quality to it. This is because power chords are just made up of the root and the fifth of the chord. The third of the chord, the part that usually gives the chord a major or minor quality, is left out of power chords. Don’t worry too much about the theory behind this though. What we want to do first is concentrate on getting familiar with the power chord shapes.
Let’s start with the first power chord shape. Place your index finger on the third fret of the low E string. When you’re playing power chords, the note you’re playing with your index finger will always be the root note of the chord. The root note is how we get the name for that specific power chord, so in this case, since our index finger is playing G note, this is a G power chord.
Now it’s pretty easy to follow the pattern to finish this power chord shape no matter where you are. Just go up two frets and over one string, putting your third finger down on that string, which here is the fifth fret of the A string. That finishes the shape of your power chord, and you can play it by strumming just the fifth and sixth strings.
The great thing about power chords is you can move them all around the fretboard. Get familiar with this shape, and practice moving it around the fretboard on the sixth string.
We’re going to make our next power chord shape by building off of the first one and just adding an extra note to it. It’s still just a two-note chord, but we’re going to double up on the root note.
Start with your G power chord again, and then add one higher octave of your root G note by placing your pinky finger on the fifth fret of the D string. If you pick each string, you’ll hear that we still have just a G note and a D note, but the third string now adds the extra G note in the higher octave.
When you play each of the power chords so far, you’ll notice that this three-string version is fuller sounding that the two strings version. This will give you another flavor you can use for your power chords. Work on getting this shape down so your fingers can go right to it. Fingers right behind the frets, and be able to move the chord anywhere along the fretboard.
The third power chord shape we’re going to learn is the same shape as the last power chord, but rather than playing the two high notes with two fingers, we’re going to take our pinky off the string. Instead, we’ll make a bar with our third finger so it actually plays both of those notes.

How To Play Rhythm Guitar for BEginners
It takes time and practice to become a good rhythm guitarist, and it’s important to put that work in. Unfortunately a lot of new guitar players focus on playing lead guitar, but in reality, when you’re playing live or with your friends, 80% of what you play is going to be rhythm guitar.
Keeping that in mind, being a good rhythm guitarist can set you apart from the crowd. If you’re a great rhythm guitar player, people are going to enjoy playing with you and enjoy listening to you. That means you’ll be the one to get the gigs.
The goal of the Rhythm Guitar Quick-Start Series is to give you a solid foundation and the key things you need to know as a rhythm guitarist. By the end of this series, you’ll be better at playing live, playing with your friends, and learning new music.
Just so you know, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing with an acoustic or an electric for this series. All of the skills and tips I’m going to teach you are equally important to both types of guitars.
As we go through this series, we’re not going to focus too much on theory. Since this is a Quick-Start series, I want you to focus on getting your hands on your guitar and practicing the most important skills as a rhythm guitar player.
We’ll go through power chords, bar chords, open chords, and some of the most important chord progressions you’ll need to know as a musician. After that, we’ll focus on your strumming hand, look at the most common strumming patterns you’ll need to know, and work on your timing too.

No matter what we’re working on, I always think that applying everything you’re learning on guitar to real music is really important to helping you grow as a musician. Throughout this series, I’ve provided you with a couple of jam tracks that you can use to play everything we’re working on. That will make it a lot more fun than just using a metronome.
Alternate Picking for Expert Guitarist
This is the first of an ongoing free guitar lessons instructional series about techniques to increase your speed and dexterity using alternate picking. Base on my experience i will teachyou and demonstrate a short riff built up of four parts. The entire riff is broken down into four parts. I play each part slowly with the guitar tablature underneath showing you which notes to pick.
Alternate Picking is when we attack each string in a consistent up down fashion, picking every single not in the scale. As a guitar player, this has been one of the riffs I have practiced over the years and it has greatly helped me, increase my speed, dexterity and precision.
Alternative Picking is obviously a very important part of playing guitar. That's why I think it's extremely important to focus on practicing your alternate picking. It's also important to note, that you should always practice with a metronome. Also - do not practice your alternate picking with distortion. Practice everything on either an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar without distortion. That is extremely important.

There are many speed players where fast alternate picking is the main part of their style. As a metal/hard rock player, speed is a huge part of my playing style as well. Even though I've been playing for 35 years, I practice my alternate picking religiously. I have watched many videos on alternate picking from players such as Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen and Tony Macalpine. Still, I find myself falling short of their instructional videos.
The Stylus Pick is a speed/sweep pickers dream. Some use the Stylus Pick not only for practicing but for playing fast, period. I came across this pick many years ago but never used it until now. The main reason I use it is to practice my alternate picking and let me tell you; Don't get upset when the pick let's you know you're not picking correctly. Don't get frustrated as the pick is designed to pick out major flaws in your picking. You will be discouraged at the begininng but after you take the time to learn how to play with the pick, you'll notice a huge difference in your picking.
How does it work? Well, it has a very fine point, just like a stylus on a turntable. If you only use the very point correctly while playing, everything will work smooth. If you attack the string at an angle that is not parallel with the string, the pick will get stuck, notifying you that you're not playing parallel to the strings. It's that simple!

Perfect Rock Guitar Tone
Over the years, if there is one thing I have battled with it would be finding that perfect guitar tone.. I have been playing since the age of 15. I am now 47 years old. After years of buying just to selling myriads of equipment, going through this configuration and that configuration, I always find myself unhappy with my sound. Sure, even the same brand and model can sound different from one another but that's not what I am talking about here. I am talking about searching for "the" hard rock tone and the madness that drives us to extremes.
I remember going into music stores hearing someone jamming and saying to myself, "Wow. That guy sounds great. I love that tone." I approached him and asked him some questions and he was just like me. Searching for that perfect hard rock guitar tone. I said to him, "Dude. What you're playing out of here sounds fantastic." He just put his head down and silently disagreed with me. This is a situation that has happened to me countless times over the years.
There are times when our hard rock tone can't get any better, and times when our tone can't get any worse. Why is this? Well, there are so many variables involved which have a lot to do with the intangibles. Basically, the things we can't account for and put a name on. However, The main thing that decides whether or not a player is happy with their sound is all in their mind. They may think their sound is horrible when others think it's great. They may thing their sound is great when other's might not like it.

Jackson DK2M Dinky Strat Guitar
This guitar was my first new purchase in a long time. Even though they're not made in American anymore, the Jackson DK2M still holds up to the company name Jackson Guitars. Jackson Guitars don't get the credit they deserve anymore. Back in the day, any 80's metal player had either a Jackson or a Charvel (which were basically one in the same), or the classic Les Paul which is always a great choice for metal with it's sustain. These days, a lot of metal players still play Jackson guitars but there are so many diversions of guitars for mainstream metal that it's hard to put a brand name on many of the guitars out there. The only other brand that I would consider playing is an ESP Guitar. They are incredible with great sustain and playability but expensive, which moves them down the list of possible realistic options.
The first thing that attracted me to this guitar is that it looks great. I like the Ebony charcoal boady and maple neck. I wish they had a model with the reverse head stock but that's more for looks than for playing. It comes with a standard Floyd Rose Tremolo. Because of the Floyd Rose, this guitar stays in perfect tune.
The neck comes unfinished, which means it is sanded down to a fine grain wood feel. This is great for playing when your hands get wet because your hands will not stick to the neck as they would if the neck were finished with a light urethane. Plays smooth and fast.
The great thing about this guitar is it's sustain. The guitar is heavy which is conducive to the sustain. Even for a neck through body or a two piece, you can feel the sustain just by putting your hear up to the body while playing unplugged. If you can hear artificial/natural harmonics resonate then you know you have a winner.

How To Hold The Guitar for Beginners
Let’s start with the casual method. If you’re right-handed, set your guitar on your right leg. The first tip I have for you is to use a footstool. Footstools range from $15-20 in a music store, and I recommend getting one if you plan on holding your guitar based on the either the casual or classical method. The footstool elevates your leg and brings the guitar to a more comfortable position, especially when playing for long periods of time.
One mistake I see newer guitar players make when using the casual method is slouching the guitar in towards them. They do this so they can see their fingers, but this is bad for posture and practice time because it causes fatigue. Instead, be sure to place the guitar upright and straight.
The next tip I have for the casual method is to bring your strumming arm tightly around the guitar to keep it close to you. This prevents the guitar from slouching and keeps it in a good position to practice and play for longer periods of time.
Next, let’s look at the classical method of holding the guitar, and in the video you can see me move my footstool from my right foot to my left. If you’re right-handed, place your left foot on the footstool and then rest your guitar on your left leg. This brings the neck of the guitar further to the left and elevates it more, which means it will be easier for you to reach all the notes on the fretboard.

Modern dimensions of the classical instrument were established by the Spaniard Antonio de Torres Jurado (1817–1892).All three principal types of resonator guitars were invented by the Slovak-American John Dopyera (1893–1988) for the National and Dobro (Dopyera Brothers) companies. Similar to the flat top guitar in appearance, but with a body that may be made of brass, nickel-silver, or steel as well as wood, the sound of the resonator guitar is produced by one or more aluminum resonator cones mounted in the middle of the top. The physical principle of the guitar is therefore similar to the loudspeaker. The original purpose of the resonator was to produce a very loud sound; this purpose has been largely superseded by electrical amplification, but the resonator guitar is still played because of its distinctive tone. The type of resonator guitar with a neck with a square cross-section—called "square neck" or "Hawaiian"—is usually played face up, on the lap of the seated player, and often with a metal or glass slide. The round neck resonator guitars are normally played in the same fashion as other guitars, although slides are also often used, especially in blues.Electric guitars can have solid, semi-hollow, or hollow bodies; solid bodies produce little sound without amplification. Electromagnetic pickups convert the vibration of the steel strings into signals, which are fed to an amplifier through a cable or radio transmitter. The sound is frequently modified by other electronic devices or the natural distortion of valves (vacuum tubes) in the amplifier. There are two main types of magnetic pickups, single- and double-coil (or humbucker), each of which can be passive or active. The electric guitar is used extensively in jazz, blues, R & B, and rock and roll. The first successful magnetic pickup for a guitar was invented by George Beauchamp, and incorporated into the 1931 Ro-Pat-In (later Rickenbacker) "Frying Pan" lap steel; other manufacturers, notably Gibson, soon began to install pickups in archtop models. After World War II the completely solid-body electric was popularized by Gibson in collaboration with Les Paul, and independently by Leo Fender of Fender Music. The lower fretboard action (the height of the strings from the fingerboard), lighter (thinner) strings, and its electrical amplification lend the electric guitar to techniques less frequently used on acoustic guitars. These include tapping, extensive use of legato through pull-offs and hammer-ons (also known as slurs), pinch harmonics, volume swells, and use of a tremolo arm or effects pedals.
The first electric guitarist of note to use a seven-string guitar was jazz guitarist George Van Eps, who was a pioneer of this instrument.[citation needed] Solid body seven-strings were popularized in the 1980s and 1990s in part due to the release of the Ibanez Universe guitar,[citation needed] endorsed by Steve Vai. Other artists go a step further, by using an eight-string guitar with two extra low strings. Although the most common seven-string has a low B string, Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds and Rickenbacker) uses an octave G string paired with the regular G string as on a 12-string guitar, allowing him to incorporate chiming 12-string elements in standard six-string playing. In 1982 Uli Jon Roth developed the "Sky Guitar," with a vastly extended number of frets, which was the first guitar to venture into the upper registers of the violin. Roth's seven-string and 33-fret "Mighty Wing" guitar features a six-octave range.
Fingers, Frets, And Strings Toturial
In this lesson, we’re going to go over the numbering systems for the guitar, including the system to use for your fingers, the frets on the guitar, and for the guitar strings. This lesson may seem very easy to you, but it’s an important lesson. Knowing these systems inside and out makes all of your future guitar lessons a lot faster.
We’ll begin with the numbering system for the fingers on your fretting hand. Your index finger is your first finger, middle finger is your second finger, ring finger is your third finger, and your pinky is your fourth finger. I’m sure this seems simple to you, but when you begin reading chord diagrams, scale diagrams, tabs, and sheet music, you’ll need to know which finger to use right away.
Next, let’s go over the numbering system for the strings of the guitar, which is a bit counterintuitive. Most people think the string closest to them, the thickest string, is the first string of the guitar, but it’s actually the opposite. The string closest to the floor, the thinnest string, is the first string. The next string up, the second thinnest string, is the second string, and so on from there. Just be aware that your thinnest string is the first string, and the thickest string is the sixth string.
The last numbering system that we’ll go over is for the frets on the guitar, which are the metal strips placed along the fretboard. The first fret is the metal strip closest to the headstock of the guitar, and then it counts down from there.
If someone told you to place your finger on the first fret, you would go to the first fret and place your finger right behind the fret. If they told you to go to the fifth fret on the first string with your first finger, you would count up five frets and place your first finger behind that fret on the thinnest string.
You’ll want to test yourself on all the numbering systems so you can quickly go the fret you need on the right string and with the right finger. Take as much time as you need to get comfortable with all three systems by testing yourself, looking at tabs, and studying chords diagrams.
Remember that knowing these systems really well will make all the other guitar lessons in the Beginner Guitar Quick-Start Series a lot faster, along with any other lessons you take later on.
The guitar is an ancient and noble instrument, whose history can be traced back over 4000 years. Many theories have been advanced about the instrument's ancestry. It has often been claimed that the guitar is a development of the lute, or even of the ancient Greek kithara. Research done by Dr. Michael Kasha in the 1960's showed these claims to be without merit. He showed that the lute is a result of a separate line of development, sharing common ancestors with the guitar, but having had no influence on its evolution. The influence in the opposite direction is undeniable, however - the guitar's immediate forefathers were a major influence on the development of the fretted lute from the fretless oud which the Moors brought with them to to Spain.
The sole "evidence" for the kithara theory is the similarity between the greek word "kithara" and the Spanish word "quitarra". It is hard to imagine how the guitar could have evolved from the kithara, which was a completely different type of instrument - namely a square-framed lap harp, or "lyre".
It would also be passing strange if a square-framed seven-string lap harp had given its name to the early Spanish 4-string "quitarra". Dr. Kasha turns the question around and asks where the Greeks got the name "kithara", and points out that the earliest Greek kitharas had only 4 strings when they were introduced from abroad. He surmises that the Greeks hellenified the old Persian name for a 4-stringed instrument, "chartar". The earliest stringed instruments known to archaeologists are bowl harps and tanburs. Since prehistory people have made bowl harps using tortoise shells and calabashes as resonators, with a bent stick for a neck and one or more gut or silk strings. The world's museums contain many such "harps" from the ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, and Egyptian civilisations. Around 2500 - 2000 CE more advanced harps, such as the opulently carved 11-stringed instrument with gold decoration found in Queen Shub-Ad's tomb, started to appear.A tanbur is defined as "a long-necked stringed instrument with a small egg- or pear-shaped body, with an arched or round back, usually with a soundboard of wood or hide, and a long, straight neck". The tanbur probably developed from the bowl harp as the neck was straightened out to allow the string/s to be pressed down to create more notes. Tomb paintings and stone carvings in Egypt testify to the fact that harps and tanburs (together with flutes and percussion instruments) were being played in ensemble 3500 - 4000 years ago.At around the same time that Torres started making his breakthrough fan-braced guitars in Spain, German immigrants to the USA - among them Christian Fredrich Martin - had begun making guitars with X-braced tops. Steel strings first became widely available in around 1900. Steel strings offered the promise of much louder guitars, but the increased tension was too much for the Torres-style fan-braced top. A beefed-up X-brace proved equal to the job, and quickly became the industry standard for the flat-top steel string guitar.
At the end of the 19th century Orville Gibson was building archtop guitars with oval sound holes. He married the steel-string guitar with a body constructed more like a cello, where the bridge exerts no torque on the top, only pressure straight down. This allows the top to vibrate more freely, and thus produce more volume. In the early 1920's designer Lloyd Loar joined Gibson, and refined the archtop "jazz" guitar into its now familiar form with f-holes, floating bridge and cello-type tailpiece.
The electric guitar was born when pickups were added to Hawaiian and "jazz" guitars in the late 1920's, but met with little success before 1936, when Gibson introduced the ES150 model, which Charlie Christian made famous.
With the advent of amplification it became possible to do away with the soundbox altogether. In the late 1930's and early 1940's several actors were experimenting along these lines, and controversy still exists as to whether Les Paul, Leo Fender, Paul Bigsby or O.W. Appleton constructed the very first solid-body guitar. Be that as it may, the solid-body electric guitar was here to stay.
Parts Of The Guitar
In this lesson, we’re going to learn about the parts of the acoustic and electric guitar. Knowing these parts is really important because you need to be able to communicate clearly with other guitar players about your instrument.
We’re going to start with the parts on the acoustic guitar, and most of them actually overlap with the parts on the electric guitar, which we’ll see later. Starting on my left hand side, this end of the guitar is the headstock, which is broken down further into more parts. We’ve got the tuning keys, which are used to tune the strings of the guitar. Connected to the tuning keys are the tuning pegs, or string pegs, and that’s where you attach your strings to the guitar.
Working our way down from the headstock, the narrow white strip is the nut. The strings rest on the nut before they go to the tuning pegs. Next we have the neck of the guitar, which is also broken down into more parts. The skinny metal strips along the neck are called frets, and the frets are connected to the fretboard. The fretboard is the piece of wood that runs all along the neck of the guitar.
Most guitars have fret markers, which can add to the aesthetics of your guitar and also help you keep track of where you are on the guitar. You may have simple dots or something more fancy like the fret markers on my guitar.
The rest of the guitar is the body, and this is where acoustic and electric guitars can vary a little. On acoustic guitars you will usually see a pick guard, which keeps you from scratching your guitar when you strum. Most acoustic guitars have a sound hole in the middle of the guitar, though some guitars may have the sound hole in a different spot or not have one at all.
The black part of the guitar on the other end of the strings is the bridge, and is usually glued on top of the body. The thin white strip on the bridge is the saddle, which is where the strings rest before they go into the holes on the bridge. When you put the strings into the holes, you put bridge pins in the holes to hold the strings in place. Some bridges don’t have pins at all, and those are called pinless bridges.
You can see in the video that I have a strap on my guitar, which is attached to strap buttons on the front and back of the guitar. Your acoustic may not have strap buttons, so you would want to buy a strap that has a shoelace so it can be tied around the neck of your guitar.
An electric guitar has many of the same parts as an acoustic guitar does, but there are also some major differences. Taking a look at my electric guitar in the video, you can see that the headstock, tuning keys, frets, fretboard, neck, and the main body are the same.
Two of the main differences on electronic guitars you should know are the pickups and the controls. The pickups are the microphones of the guitar, picking up the vibrations of the strings and moving them to your amplifier. There are two basic varieties of pickups: humbuckers and single-coils.
The pickups on my guitar in the video are humbuckers, which are generally wider. Underneath the cover of each humbucker, there are two rows of screws that pick up the sound from the strings. Humbuckers got their name because they get rid of the hum that usually comes with single-coil pickups. Single-coil pickups are typically a bit brighter, but have the hum that humbuckers can usually get rid of. Neither humbuckers nor single-coils are better or worse, so it comes down to personal preference and the kind of sound you want for your guitar.
Next, let’s talk about the controls on the body of the guitar, which are volume knobs and tone knobs. You’ll notice my guitar has four knobs, but yours may have one, two, or three, depending on the type of guitar you have. The volume knobs control how much volume or output is coming from your pickups. The first knob on my guitar controls the volume for one of my pickups. The knob beside it controls the tone for the same pickup, meaning I can control how much treble there is.
The second type of control on electric guitar is the pickup selector switch. On my guitar, I have a three-way style toggle switch, and it controls which pickup is active. If I toggle the switch down, the bridge pickup is active, which is naturally has more treble because it is closer to the end of the strings. If the toggle switch is in the middle, both pickups are active which gives a medium tone. If the toggle is up, then the neck pickup is active, which is generally a more mellow tone. There are a couple of different types of pickup selector switch types, including the toggle switch, or if you have a Stratocaster guitar, you may have a 3 or 5-way blade switch.
